Why we do what we do.
Welcome to Oak Savannah Aussies and thank you for visiting!
Oak Savannah Aussies is the result of a love affair with the Australian Shepherd breed, all stemming from a chance encounter. A brief history. Roughly 10 years ago, we were enjoying lunch in LaCrosse, Wisconsin when we spotted a young couple walking one of the prettiest puppies we’d seen in a while. At the time, we didn’t recognize the breed so we approached them to talk. "She" was a red tri mini-aussie, recently acquired from a local breeder. They referred us to that breeder and we went for a visit, in search of a puppy. While we didn’t purchase a puppy from that breeder, we began researching other breeders and that ultimately led us to Cruze, our 9 year-old blue merle male. Cruze was just weeks old, at the time, and was located nearly 2,000 miles from us! We’d never been through such a process before and, to be honest, it was a little daunting to consider. Purchasing a valuable puppy located far away...one we couldn’t meet in person first...then, having him flown to us; it was something we weren’t certain we wanted to do...but we did it. Well...it all worked out because, fortunately, we had chosen a reputable breeder and Cruze is a wonderful boy.
Fast forward a decade and we have learned SO much. We’ve come to understand the undeniable importance of breeding based on genetic testing, conformational, structural and behavioral evaluations and, just as importantly, transparency with all of our clients...from the moments their puppies enter the world to the days they leave our home (those are always happy-sad days), and afterward. We’ve also learned, at the end of the day, that not all breeders should be breeders. While some are certainly good, and a few are even excellent, too many others have appeared (to us) to care more about simply selling puppies than about raising them as well as they possibly can and finding proper, loving homes for them.
Oak Savannah Aussies is committed to timely, thorough, thoughtful communication and transparency with all of our clients. I suppose you could say this is our, “Mission Statement”. We are passionate about miniature (& small standard) Australian Shepherds, want to do right by both the breed, and our clients, and we are committed to treating both as extensions of the Oak Savannah Aussies family.
